How to export a transcript from Otter.ai (TXT, DOCX, PDF)

Three dots, Export, then a format with speaker names and timestamps on. The free plan exports TXT. The steps on the web and in the mobile app.

  1. 1Open the conversation in Otter.
  2. 2Click the three dots at the top and choose Export.
  3. 3Pick TXT or DOCX, and keep “Show speaker names” and “Show timestamps” switched on. The free Basic plan exports TXT only.
  4. 4Export, then upload the file here or paste its text.

Leaving speaker names off makes the transcript unusable here, because we cannot tell which turns are yours.

Which Otter export format should I use?
TXT or DOCX, with “Show speaker names” and “Show timestamps” switched on. Speaker names are not optional: without them nothing can tell which turns are yours.
Can I export from Otter on the free plan?
Yes, as TXT. DOCX, PDF and SRT need a paid plan. The free plan also limits each conversation to 30 minutes and shows only your 25 most recent conversations.
Can I export from the Otter mobile app?
Yes. Open the conversation, go to the Transcript tab, tap the three dots, then Export and Export text.
Does Otter transcribe German?
Yes. Otter transcribes English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese (Simplified), with German and Chinese still in beta. Set the language before the meeting: a conversation cannot be transcribed again in another language. betterput reads meetings held in English.
Does Otter keep timestamps?
Yes, if you leave the option on when you export. Keeping them means speaking pace can be measured rather than guessed at.
