How to get the transcript from a Microsoft Teams meeting
Teams keeps the transcript with the meeting chat. Here is how to download it as a file.
- 1Open the meeting in your Teams calendar, or find it in Chat.
- 2Open the Recap or Transcript tab.
- 3Use the download control and choose .vtt rather than .docx — the .vtt keeps timestamps.
- 4If there is no Transcript tab, transcription was not started during the call. Someone has to press Start transcription while the meeting is running.

- With the meeting itself. Open the meeting from your Teams calendar or find it in Chat, then look for the Recap or Transcript tab.
- Should I download the .vtt or the .docx?
- The .vtt. Both contain the words, but only the .vtt keeps timestamps, which is what makes pace and talk-time measurable instead of estimated.
- Why is the Transcript tab missing?
- Transcription was never started during the call. Someone has to press Start transcription while the meeting is running — it is not retroactive, and a recording alone does not produce one.
